01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Just beside the torii gate of Matsuo Taisha, Toriyone is known for its long-established signature, Katsu-dori Mizutaki: a chicken hot pot with a broth that is both clear in flavour and deeply savoury. Chicken bones are simmered slowly until the soup turns pale and silky. It is not greasy; try a sip before adding anything to appreciate the deep stock flavour of the chicken. The pot is filled with the restaurant’s distinctive aged chicken, raised over an extended period, smooth white tofu from the long-established Saga Tofu Morika in Saga-Arashiyama, and seasonal Kyoto vegetables. Special yuzu ponzu brings their flavours into focus.

At the main building, kaiseki courses place Mizutaki at their heart. Seasonal small dishes, sashimi and grilled items ease the meal into motion. Once the ingredients from the pot have been enjoyed, the remaining concentrated broth is used to make egg porridge with Zuiro, a specially blended limited rice, and rich red-yolk eggs. The flavour soaks into each grain, bringing the meal to a gentle close. Dessert may include Laice, a house-made ice cream combining rice and Kinshi Masamune sake, followed by Uji matcha and seasonal sweets.

The main building offers kaiseki in traditional Japanese private rooms overlooking a garden. For a more casual meal, the annex is open at lunchtime without a reservation. Its popular Ryotei Oyakodon pairs aged chicken breast and thigh, softly set with stock and premium red-yolk egg, with the restaurant’s famous chicken soup and special karaage. There are also set meals with an individual Mizutaki pot, and a Yudofu set featuring Morika tofu. It is an unhurried way to enjoy Kyoto flavours before or after a stroll in Arashiyama or a visit to Matsuo Taisha.
